Q: What is The Critical Incident ?
A: The Critical Incident is a one-day event that takes place every year as part of the Brighton Festival Fringe.
Critical Incident is a one-day event that takes place every year in Brighton in May, as part of the Brighton Festival Fringe. It is a day of workshops, debates, discussions and performance exploring a particular theme. This theme changes each year, and was “Freedom” in 2010. Participants can book an all-day pass and choose which sessions to attend. Contributors who lead sessions are trying out new material, new ideas and approaches. Read our vision here.
Q: What is a critical incident?
A: A critical incident is an event of life-changing significance.
The aim of this event is for both contributors and participants to have a critical incident either offering or taking part in a session at some point during the day.
Q: Do I have to take part in both the Brighton and Edinburgh Critical Incidents?
A: No.
You can be part of either or both; it is entirely up to you.
Q: Where does it take place?
A: In workshops spaces and cafes in Brighton
The Critical Incident Brighton takes place at the Phoenix Gallery and Moksha Caffe in Brighton. Q: Why might I want to contribute?
A: If you are a trainer, educator, facilitator, workshop leader, artist, agent of change or any creative person who wants to explore or share your approach to personal and working life with a receptive group of people “on retreat” for a day of creative inspiration, personal or professional development, the Critical Incident is for you.
You have the opportunity for a workshop or meeting space for up to a couple of hours and your session is part of The Critical Incident programme which is part of the official Brighton or Edinburgh Fringe.
Q: Can I deliver one of my products or services?
A: No.
The idea is to develop one of your products or services, to try out something new, to experiment. You might want to provide a taster of something new you are offering, or to seek feedback on something you are working on. But this is not the place just to deliver something “off the shelf”. You may well get interest in what you do, or even new clients or customers, but you do need to be trying out something new. The style is informal so it is an ideal place to experiment and take a risk with innovation!
Q: Will I be paid?
A: No.
The Critical Incident is unpaid. You get a free space and free publicity for your event in the programme. You get to meet new people or invite your current friends, associates or clients to your event. You will need to promote it as well and not expect a ready audience to be delivered into your room, though last year, 140 people came over the day to the whole Brighton event.
Q: What happens to the income from The Critical Incident?
A: The Critical Incident is non-profit making.
The Critical Incident is subsidised by CATS3000 and other sponsors. For example, Arts & Business have been a sponsor, as well as FringeReview. Any income goes towards covering publicity, venue and Fringe registration costs. This is a chance to gain exposure for your work, meet new people and to experiment with your work and play.
Q: How to I offer a session?
A: Fill out the booking form, and we’ll be in touch!
You will also be able to offer a session on the day as we keep a few slots open for “open space”. Of course, the earlier you get involved the more chance there is to let us help you shape your session and be part of all the publicity for the event.
Q: How is my session promoted?
A: You will need to do your own promotion.
The overall event is also part of the printed programme for the Fringe Festivals which goes out on paper to tens of thousands of people, cafes and venues. We also have a web page with online booking on the Fringe websites as well as our own web sites and mailouts. We also appear on local radio and blogs. There is a The Critical Incident Facebook group with 200 members and a twitter feed #critincident #criticalincident

Contribution offers will be welcome from October 2010. openand to be guaranteed full publicity we need offers by February 10th 2011.
